The Project....

The Cameroonian population faces great challenges on a daily basis in terms of corruption, mob justice and access to justice. Our project is targeting the local level of judicial administration. By offering the communities training in mediation and dispute resolution we hope to improve access to justice through legitimate means, reducing incentives for corruption and mob justice. The first stage of the project entails visits to thirty villages in and around Kumba. The second stage of the project will be workshops offered to council and hopefully community members in mediation and dispute resolution. We expect to hold these sessions in the second half of July, with a possibility of continuing annually depending on their success, viability and impact.

We have hit the ground running, visiting over fifteen villages in the last month to meet with council members and gather information on local judicial systems. We are now more than half way through our village visits and have begun looking at training based on the information gathered.

Our visits to the villages have been exhilarating, terrifying, challenging, fascinating and incredible lessons in Cameroonian life. Since we started this blog a month into the visits and we don’t want to exhaust you with stories we thought we would start officially blogging from here on in.
